New Year New Homes

We have purchased 16 new homes from developers Story Homes and Russell Armer over the past few weeks at Allithwaite Road in Grange over Sands and Natland Road in Kendal bringing the total number of new homes developed to 26 so far this financial year.

Following the completion of the Jubilee Close scheme in Kirkby Lonsdale, we bought these 16 houses under an affordable housing agreement with SLDC and the Developers. The feedback from the new tenants has been very positive with many commenting on how easy and cheap it is to heat their homes.

We have also had Board approval to appoint a contractor so start on the 14 new homes on Waterside/Dowkers Lane with an aim to start on site at the end of February 2016. The first signs of work will be the demolition of the old sheds to 7

Phil Houghton, Business Development Manager at Story Homes, says: We are pleased to be working with South Lakes Housing and supporting the delivery of high quality affordable homes in South Lakeland and Cumbria. There is a real housing shortage in the area and delivering these new homes together, provides an opportunity for local families to live in homes which are part of a great community.

There are currently over 3,500 people wanting to move to a social rented home in South Lakeland with just 10% of the districts housing stock classified as affordables. As the largest housing association in South Lakeland we let around 300 homes every year. The board of SLH has set an ambitious plan to build or acquire 120 new homes by 2020 despite the financial challenges brought about by a £5M rent cut announced by the Government in the summer budget.
