Jane is one of our Independent Living Officers, herself and her team ensure the smooth running of the 12 sheltered schemes that house approximately 400 of South Lakes Housing tenants. Our sheltered schemes support our tenants to remain living independently in their own home for as long as they wish to stay there and it is safe for them to do so.
Jane has worked for South Lakes Housing for 20 years and during this time she has been a mobile Scheme Manager as well as a Scheme Manager.
She has a Diploma in Social Work and previously worked with young people who have disabilities in a residential setting for Barnardo’s in Yorkshire as well as working at a private sheltered scheme in Windermere.
As part of her role, Jane helps to keep tenants informed and makes sure that their details are kept up to date. Jane also regularly contacts tenants that require routine communication.
Jane will also do viewings and sign-ups for any empty homes we have within our sheltered schemes. Once tenants are settled into their new home the Independent Living Officers will carry out regular visits and will also help tenants to book guest rooms, report repairs and signposting to relevant agencies.
The Independent Living Officers will also carry out weekly and monthly health and safety checks on schemes, which include; testing fire alarms, fire doors, checking communal areas are clear of rubbish and hazards, checking that all lights are working and performing Legionella flushes.
Jane said, “The role of Independent Living Officer is varied and interesting, you can be out on schemes doing weekly checks, interacting with tenants, viewings and sign-ups as well as having time in the office working alongside colleague’s problem solving and sharing information”.
