How to end my tenancy

We understand that there are reasons people may need to move home, and we would not want anyone to feel that they need to move for any reason which we could support you to resolve.

If this relates to antisocial behaviour (ASB) or outstanding repairs for example, we will see how we can resolve the issues to ensure you feel comfortable staying in your home.

Your guide to moving out

If you still need to move out, it’s best to prepare as much as you can ahead of time. This helps to minimise any stress and avoid last-minute surprises. The links below will tell you everything you need to know about the moving out process.

Telling us you want to end the tenancy

If you want to end your tenancy and move out, you need to let us know in advance, this is called giving notice. Your tenancy agreement will explain exactly how much notice you must give, but it will usually be around one month.

Rent will be charged until the end of the notice period and the keys have been returned to us. The property must be clear of all contents.

Going into care or if a tenant has died

If you are acting on behalf of someone who has died, you do need to give us notice and we will be happy to support you in any way possible during the process.  In these circumstances, please contact our Customer Services Team.

The tenancy will end when the keys have been returned to us.  The property must be clear of all contents. Rent will be charged until the keys have been returned.  If the tenant had been in receipt of benefits such as housing benefits this payment ends when the tenant dies.

If you are helping someone else move out who has gone into care – please contact our Customer Services Team.  The normal notice period of the tenancy will apply, and rent will be charged until the end of the notice period and the keys have been returned to us. The property must be clear of all contents.

If you need any further support on this matter, please contact our Customer Services Team.

Returning your keys

The best way to return your keys to us is by leaving them in a key safe which will be fitted to your property. We will confirm this with you before your moving out date.

Once you’ve left, let us know that the property is fully locked and ready for us to enter.

Please read this checklist to ensure that the property is returned to SLH in a good state of repair to avoid any charges: Returning an SLH Home Checklist

Important: We will stop charging you rent once you tell us you have left your property.
