Frequent questions about mutual exchange
Am I able to change my tenancy to someone else?
Yes, in some cases you can transfer your tenancy to a spouse, partner or a family member. This is known as ‘assignment’.
To transfer your tenancy to a family member we ask you to seek our approval and may ask you to prove your eligibility. To discuss this further, please contact us on 0300 303 8540.
Swapping your tenancy with another housing association or council tenant is known as a mutual exchange.
What happens to my tenancy when I die?
If you die a partner or adult family member may be able to take over your tenancy. This is known as succession.
Your tenancy will automatically transfer to any remaining joint tenant, if there is no surviving joint tenant, the tenancy may be able to pass to someone who is eligible, if the tenancy did not pass to you by succession.
If nobody is eligible to succeed your tenancy, we will take the necessary steps to end the tenancy. We would work with any remaining household members who do not meet the criteria for succession to obtain secure accommodation.
Can I add someone new to my current tenancy?
Once the tenancy has commenced, we do not allow any further additions. This person may be eligible to succeed should you die.
