Sheltered Housing

Sheltered or retirement housing is specially designed accommodation for mainly older people.  Schemes vary but standard features include:
  • Self contained flats
  • Communal facilities
  • Security and safety features
  • A Scheme Manager
  • 24 hour emergency assistance

To put your name on the Housing Register for Sheltered Housing you need to complete a Housing Application Form.

Where are our sheltered housing schemes?

We have schemes situated widely throughout South Lakeland.  Details of individual schemes are shown below:-

What are the benefits of sheltered housing?

The benefits of living in sheltered housing are many and include:
  • Having your own front door and the independence that brings company when wanted, privacy when it isn't
  • Opportunities to join with other and share your skills in activities
  • A sense of security and peace of mind
  • Remaining part of the community
  • Good quality housing
  • A 'home for life' wherever possible with care and support adjusted to changing need
Each scheme is individual and therefore facilities vary from scheme to scheme.

What is the role of the Scheme Manager?

The Scheme Manager will:
  • Help newcomers settle into their new home and demonstrate how everything works
  • Keep in regular contact with each resident
  • Deal with emergencies
  • Plan and encourage participation in social activities
  • Report and monitor repairs and maintenance work
  • Ensure the residents needs are met this may involve liaison with families, statutory, voluntary and private agencies
  • Give advice on services available, for examples shopping, cleaning, cooking, personal and nursing care.  (Please note the Scheme Manager does not directly provide these services)

What am I paying for?

Your amenity charge pays for most of the Council's sheltered housing service, which covers things like:
  • The Scheme Manager
  • The intercom system
  • Control centre charges
  • Communal facilities
  • Cleaning

Sheltered Housing Agreement

Sheltered housing tenants have had the opportunity to draw up action plans for their scheme.  The plans form part of a sheltered housing agreement which outlines:
  • The information tenants can expect to receive about the sheltered housing service and how that should be provided
  • How they can monitor the service which they receive
  • How they can become involved in planning new services or altering the existing service

Careline

Careline is an alarm system which helps elderly or disabled tenants to get assistance when they need it. A special telephone and pendant are used to contact a control centre which is staffed 24 hours a day. The control centre is able to summon help from relatives, friends or neighbours to attend to tenants in need of assistance.

The Council provides this service to elderly or disabled tenants living in certain Council bungalows and flats. For more information or to report any fault in your Careline equipment please contact us on 01539 717717.

South Lakeland Community Alarms

Any resident can receive this service through South Lakeland Community Alarms (a registered charity). For information about the cost of this service and other details, please telephone (01539) 735805 or call to see them at 92 Stricklandgate, Kendal.
