Are Un-Serviced Gas Appliances Dangerous?

If gas appliances are not maintained or fitted correctly, they can produce excess carbon monoxide which is highly poisonous and could kill.

"You can't see it, smell it or taste it - carbon monoxide can kill"

What are the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning?

The symptoms are similar to flu:

  • Tiredness

  • Drowsiness

  • Headache

  • Nausea

  • Pains in the chest and stomach

If you or your family have these symptoms when an appliance is on or you can smell gas, you must do the following:

  • If possible, turn off the gas supply at the meter

  • DO NOT turn the appliance back on until the appliance has been repaired and checked

  • Open all doors and windows

  • DO NOT use any electrical appliance or switch on or off any switches

  • Extinguish all naked flames

  • DO NOT SMOKE

  • If your property has a door intercom system, open the door manually when the engineer arrives

  • Contact the National Grid on 0800 111 999 Nation Gas Emergency Service - 0800 111 999
