SLH insures its dwellings and, thus, in the case of a fire that damaged a property SLH would claim on its insurance for the cost of repairing the property. 
 
Tenants may make insurance claims against SLH for any damage that SLH causes to the tenants' possessions, or injury to the tenant or members of their family.
 
As an example, if an SLH trades person were to hammer a nail into the wall and inadvertently burst a pipe which resulted in the floor being flooded and ruining the tenant's carpet, then SLH would be responsible for the cost of replacing the carpet as clearly its action has been negligent.
 
However, there are a variety of other issues for which SLH may not be negligent. For example, if there is a particularly bad storm which lifts a tile off of a roof and as a result water comes through the roof, through the ceiling and damages a bedroom carpet, then SLH would claim that it has not been negligent as it could not have prevented that from happening. Under such circumstances SLH would seek to reject any such claim.
 

Insuring your contents

SLH does not insure any of the contents that belong to the tenant, but South Lakes Housing tenants can  insure the contents of their homes in an easy and affordable way. South Lakes has negotiated a  scheme with Royal & Sun Alliance insurance plc which is a home contents policy especially designed for the tenants of South Lakes Housing.  It's simple and value for money, with premiums payable weekly, monthly or annually.
